Planet Rotations #49

In the age of digital music, we tend to skip through albums, listening to one or two tracks - missing some of the deeper cuts that may be brilliant. I am a big fan of the album format, and love to experience the entire album the way the artist intended. Listening to one or two songs is like randomly reading a few chapters of a book and expecting to understand the completed work. Like any music lover, I love to share what I'm listening to and discover some new things from friends. Here's a portion of my playlist for this week. Please put your lists in the comments below, or interact at the Life On This Planet Facebook or Twitter.

I now have a Youtube Channel for my blog, so be sure to check it out and subscribe. Usually on my weekly playlists, you've just seen a list of albums, starting this week I will be posting a short video where I pick out 5 records and talk about them. I hope you enjoy. - Bret

Friday On The Turntable: David Bowie - Diamond Dogs

For those of you that follow my blog on Facebook, you'll recall that each Friday I post a featured record that I'm currently enjoying. Starting today, I decided to step it up a bit and start filming short videos to talk about each album. I've also started a youtube channel for Life On This Planet, so be sure to subscribe!

Let's kick things off with one of my favorite albums of all time - David Bowie's Diamond Dogs. Please enjoy and feel free to leave me your thoughts on this record. Cheers!

Instrumental Of The Day: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Pretty Little Ditty

In the next couple of weeks, I'll be compiling a list of some of the best 'rock' instrumentals. As always, 'best' doesn't necessarily mean that they are the most technical guitar pieces - while some will inevitably be - rather they will be a group of instrumental pieces that are gems on the albums for which they appear. Leading up to the 'Best Of List,' I will be peppering my blog with 'Instrumentals of the Day,' so please stand by. If you'd like to follow my daily posts, please click on that Facebook icon over to the right. :)

In - or around - 1987, I remember going into my local library and checking out the Red Hot Chili Peppers first album - on vinyl! Those were the days. :) A few years later, the Chili Peppers put out my favorite record in their catalog, Mother's Milk. Immediately following their take on Jimi Hendrix's 'Fire,' comes a beautiful instrumental called 'Pretty Little Ditty' - one of my favorite tracks by the Peppers. Originally clocking in at just over 1:30, an expanded version appeared on the 2003 remaster - you can hear the full version at the Spotify player below. Those of you with a good ear may also recognize that the main melody line was 'sampled' by a certain band in the early 00s.
