Most Anticipated Albums of 2011

I've been working on my list of the best albums and songs of 2010, and I started thinking about what I'm excited about for 2011.

Social Distortion - Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes [January 18, 2011]
Their first album in 7 years.  Pre-order at Amazon.

U2 - Songs Of Ascent [TBA]
U2 is already performing some of the new songs live.  A song called Mercy was just released on a limited edition vinyl called Wide Awake In Europe - it's really good.  Can't wait for this album.

Tim Booth [Spring 2011]
I just learned today that Tim Booth - of James - will be releasing his next solo album in the Spring.  Rad. As a side note, James are scheduled to release a massive box set called The Gathering Of Sound [March 1, 2011].  Pre-order at Amazon.

Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding [February 28, 2011]
The debut album from Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher's band.  Let's hope that the rest of the album is better than the lead off single, Bring The Light.  Nonetheless, I am excited about this one.

REM - Collapse Into Now [Spring 2011]
I really liked their last one, Accelerate, so I'm interested to see what's next for REM.

Jane's Addiction [TBA]
Although I have low expectations of this one since Eric Avery's second departure from the band, I am still curious to see what they come up with, and who will be taking Eric's place.  Jane's Addiction is one of my favorite bands of all time, so let's just wait and see.

Low - C'mon (tentative title) [TBA]
According to Low's site, the sessions for their upcoming album have finished.  Hopefully we'll see this one drop in the Spring.

Peter Murphy - Ninth [TBA]
This was supposed to be released in the Fall of 2010, according to his website, but I have not been able to find any updates.  I saw him perform a good chunk of this record live and the songs were really memorable.  This would be his first solo album since 2004's Unshattered.

Here are some others that are scheduled to release in 2011:
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Radiohead
Current 93
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Audra  :)

What are you looking forward to in 2011?

  1. I'll look forward to:

    - Audra
    - Tim Booth
    - Peter Murphy (this has been in the can for how long now? By the time it's released (if), that will possibly be two years since it was recorded(!).

This is probably all, you know me!

I'm also looking forward to REM and RHCP, and i am hoping On/Off (J-Pop band) will release too. I would like Amethystium (they make amazing music) to bring out some new stuff too, but i'm not keeping my hopes up :p

  7. Ooo such a toughie! Well I absolutely love On/Off's newest single which is called Butterfly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeR-Zlu48EI&feature=related but they are mostly known for "Futatsu no kodou to akai tsumi" and "Rinne ~Rondo~".

As for Amethystium my personal favourite is Autumn Interlude: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KCW_ixWRbY

  8. I am skeptical of everything you listed, the exceptions being Nick Cave and Audra. I'd usually have nothing bad to say about Low - but it's been disappointing direction they've gone in for the past few years. R.E.M. - I've learned that whatever they do will be different from what they did previously - and I doubt this album will be any different and I doubt it will be a disappointment. What I do think is, it won't be memorable. Wire is supposed to have a new album - again - skepitcal.

I'm interested in what Devendra Banheart does with the guy from The Swans. Maisy is a big Db fan... my interestis a curiosity. There's rumors of not only a new JAMC album, but also a new Mazzy Star release - if there's any truth to either rumor - I will be all over it.

Personally - I am looking forward to P.J. Harvey's new album. After White Chalk and the collaborative album - I expect a lighter mood this time around. Fleet Foxes are expected to have a new release. I am anxious for this one. I liked every single song on the ep and full-length debut - curious to see where the have gone musically since getting global attention. I'm curious about Culture Club, Jamiroquai and Beastie Boys, I'll likley find these online before buying. The only other thing I know of that I'll definitely pick up is The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

  9. Dear Haloe,
I've really been digging Low's stuff over the last couple of albums. I thought that The Great Destroyer was on of their best and Drums & Guns was pretty rad. It'll be interesting to see what the new one sounds like. Did you ever check out the Retribution Gospel Choir?

That would be really cool if JAMC and/or Mazzy put out a new one. Looooong overdue.

I had no idea the Culture Club is planning a new one. I'm still suspicious of The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. I'll have to give that first one another spin.

    Happy New Year.
    Bret
