Planet Rotations #40

In the age of digital music, we tend to skip through albums, listening to one or two tracks - missing some of the deeper cuts that may be brilliant. I am a big fan of the album format, and love to experience the entire album the way the artist intended. Listening to one or two songs is like randomly reading a few chapters of a book and expecting to understand the completed work. Like any music lover, I love to share what I'm listening to and discover some new things from friends. Here's a portion of my playlist for this week. Please put your lists in the comments below, or interact at the Life On This Planet Facebook or Twitter.

Song Of The Day 1999: Brendan Perry - Saturday's Child

For the next two weeks, I am representing each year of the 1990s with a song-a-day... and each song will come from a debut record of its corresponding year. As you can probably guess, I'm preparing for a big Best 90s Debut List, ala the one from last week: The 25 Best Debut Albums Of The 1980s. I had a lot of fun putting it together, and having some of you guys contribute lists made it even better. So start thinking of your Top 5 Debut Albums of the 1990s! If you haven't already, please subscribe to my daily posts over at the Life On This Planet Facebook Page. Thanks for stopping by.

We are now at the conclusion of our daily run-through of some great tracks that appeared on debut albums released in the 1990s. Be sure to check back early next week for my Best Debut Albums of the 90s list. Back In 1999, Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry released his very first solo LP, Eye Of The Hunter. The glorious opening track, 'Saturday's Child' is today's featured song. If you are hearing it for the very first time, please enjoy. As you may have heard, DCD is back - with a world tour and new album coming this Summer! :)

Don't own this album? Fix that now:

Discover: Icons Of Andria - Operator's Dream

Today begins a new series on Life On This Planet called Discover. In this semi-regular feature, I will be highlighting some up-and-coming bands that I feel are worthy of your attention. If you would like to keep up with my daily postings, or contact me directly, be sure to LIKE the Life On This Planet Facebook Page - or follow my blog on Twitter.

Sometimes it takes a while to get around to listening to things sitting in my mailbox, or on my desk - but within 30 seconds of hearing 'Operator's Dream' by Icons Of Andria, I'm glad that I finally got around to clicking 'play' on this one. Based out of Los Angeles, Icons Of Andria are currently working on a Sci-Fi concept album - for which they release each track as a free download as its completed, ala The Smashing Pumpkins. Currently, there are four tracks up - including today's featured song, 'Operator's Dream.' I was immediately impressed with the strong production and beautiful vocals of singer Fabiola Sanchez. The song lies somewhere between Mazzy Star, Belly and Magnet's 'Willow's Song' from the Wicker Man soundtrack. Give it a listen below, add it to your mp3 library for free, and click here to join the band on Facebook.
