Planet Rotations #223: Movie Soundtracks

In the age of digital music, we tend to skip through albums, listening to one or two tracks - missing some of the deeper cuts that may be brilliant. We are huge fans of the album format, and love to experience the entire collection the way the artist intended. Listening to one or two songs is like randomly reading a few chapters of a book and expecting to understand the completed work. Like all music lovers, we love to share what we're listening to and discover some new things from friends.

Movie Soundtrack Week!!! Sarah and I went on a movie soundtrack binge this week and have each highlighted 12 that we played in full - the first 12 are mine, the second 12 hers. We've also chosen a song from each one that was exclusive to the soundtrack, and added them to our ongoing Planet Rotations 2017 Spotify playlist at the bottom of this page. For something extra, check out the 40 Best Movie Soundtracks feature that I put together back in 2011 - here's the link.

The 40 Best Movie Soundtracks

A couple of weeks ago, I found a few movie soundtrack CDs in the 50 cent clearance bin at a record store that is closing down. These collections can have some really rare gems like cover songs, exclusive recordings, etc. So it got me thinking: what are THE best movie soundtrack albums?

This entire week I've been really digging deep, trying to find all of those lost treasures. The rules I gave myself for this list are: 1. The soundtrack has to have around 50% vocal music or more (so no movie scores, we'll save that for a future list), 2. The songs have to appear on the soundtrack album (sometimes a rad song will appear in a movie, but it didn't end up on the album).

I've posted a ton of links, so if you'd like to buy the movie, the album, or individual songs, there are several formats to choose from.

If you'd like to keep up with my daily postings, head on over to the Life On This Planet Facebook Page and click LIKE over there. Okay, so without further ado... here are The 40 Best Movie Soundtracks. Please enjoy.
