Welcome to this week's Friday On The Turntable feature! For those of you that follow my blog on Facebook, you'll recall that each Friday I post a featured record that I'm currently enjoying. To enhance the experience, I've been filming short videos - discussing a brief history of the record, my favorite tracks and what it means to me. The video is embedded below - and don't forget to subscribe to my youtube channel here.
Really excited to bring you guys my review of the new Peter Murphy album, Lion. In this video I'm showing off the vinyl edition, talking about my favorite tracks, a short review of his concert at the Belly Up in Solano Beach and lots more.

Ranking Peter Murphy - from 'Should The World Fail To Fall Apart' to 'Ninth'
Today marks the fifth edition of a special series within my weekly feature, Friday On The Turntable - instead of looking at one album, I am featuring all of Peter Murphy's studio albums from 1986 - 2011 - and ranking them! It was a mammoth task, and proved frustrating when putting albums that I love against other ones that I love. Nonetheless, I've provided a ranked list - from #8 (good) - #1 (the best).
If you would like the short / textual version of the list, please scroll past the video. If you would like to watch my video discussion, check out the embedded video below - and be sure to click 'Subscribe' on my Youtube channel - for immediate access to all of my video posts. As always, I look forward to reading your comments and feedback. Click on any of the album titles if you'd like to purchase them. At the very bottom of this article is a link to a Peter Murphy playlist that I created on Spotify.
As mentioned in the video, here is a link to my band Audra's Bandcamp Site. Thank you!

Peter Murphy & the late Mick Karn Release Second Dalis Car - InGladAloneness
New Release: Dalis Car - InGladAloneness EP
After the breakup of Bauhaus in 1983, singer Peter Murphy collaborated with bass player Mick Karn (of the band Japan) to record a one-off album - The Waking Hour
- under the name Dalis Car. The two reunited in 2010, recording a collection of songs for a second Dalis Car release. Unfortunately, Mick Karn passed away in January 2011, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Back in July 2011, the first track from the upcoming, 5-song EP hit the world wide web - in the meantime, it's been a long wait to get the remainder of the EP called InGladAloneness.
Today the wait ends - grab the EP at the link below. As far as I can tell, the EP is available only digitally, as the very-limited, physical copies are already sold out at Mick Karn's site. I'm really digging these songs, especially the acoustic beauty of 'If You Go Away' - let me know what you think.

Song Of The Day 2011: Dalis Car - Artemis (Peter Murphy & Mick Karn)
This week we're going to pause from our regular feature to stay current with some new music released in the last few months. Keep up to date on all my daily postings by clicking LIKE on the Life On This Planet Facebook Page.
Just a few weeks back, Murphy announced that the recently-recorded tracks will be released this year as an EP called In Glad Aloneness.
Last night, the first song was released called Artemis. It originally appeared as an instrumental on The Waking Hour
, but this new version is complete with Peter Murphy's vocals. Like the original Dalis Car, it's not immediately accessible, so give it a few listens to really get in tune with its atmosphere - parts of it hint at some moments of Bowie's Lodger
album.
Unfortunately, I do not have an audio clip to share with you. Artemis is available as a download, direct from Mick Karn's website. All proceeds go to his wife and son, so please show your support. Here is a link to his site - registration just takes a few seconds.
In the meantime, here's a track from the original album. This is The Judgement Is The Mirror
from 1984. Please enjoy.

Peter Murphy - Live at The Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA, June 29, 2011 - Review
The Troubadour is a legendary Los Angeles venue, so when the opportunity came up to see Peter Murphy there, I couldn't refuse - even if it meant driving six hours! Hot on the heels of his newly-released album, Ninth
, the LA show was the final performance of a short, California promotional tour.
Peter Murphy took the stage to roaring applause, opening with Burning From The Inside
- the title track from his former band Bauhaus' 1983 album. An abrupt stop transformed the song into Ninth's Iggy-fueled Velocity Bird
. Although the opening three songs were high energy, the show really took off with the performance of his new single I Spit Roses
. The band, consisting of the same members that I've seen over the last couple of tours - Mark Thwaite - guitar, Nick Lucero - drums and Jeff Schwartoff - bass - are solid. Although I didn't notice any problems with the vocals, Murphy seemed to be having issues the entire night.
One thing that I noticed over the last couple tours is that Peter Murphy now really likes to talk on stage. Breaking down the barrier between performer and audience, he commands the stage as a seasoned pro. He took about a ten minute break to playfully tease the sound guy, have a male audience member grab his chest and then refer to himself as not a goth, but a 'vintage hipster.' LOL.
If you didn't already know, Murphy had a cameo in Eclipse
- the third film in the Twilight saga. While filming, he struck up a friendship with an actor who happened to be a big fan of his music. That guy is Billy Burke, who portrays Bella's father in all of the films. Sure enough, Billy Burke comes out on stage to sing backup vocals on the Bauhaus tune Silent Hedges
. Then Murphy switches to keyboards and starts up Love Hysteria's My Last Two Weeks
, with Burke on lead vocals. These two guys seemed like old friends, and it was a charming moment to experience. By the way, Burke's vocals sounded damn good.
Nothing was played from his first album, or any other tracks from Love Hysteria
. The Deep
album was represented by Deep Ocean Vast Sea
and a cool version of Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem
with Murphy on 12-string.
Obviously the main focus of the show was on his new record - Peace To Each
, Seesaw Sway
, Memory Go
and Uneven & Brittle
- all sounded intense, with Brittle being my favorite from Ninth
. In the live setting, it was nothing short of brilliant. An unreleased track from the Ninth
sessions, Gaslight, had the vibe of some of the more ambient tracks from his 1995 album, Cascade
. Hopes are for Nettwerk (his label) to release it, along with two other unreleased songs as an EP. Speaking of Cascade
, an emotional version of I'll Fall With Your Knife
was one of the show's best moments.
Other highlights were his phenomenal cover of The Stooges' Raw Power
, and a really intense version of Stigmata Martyr
from Bauhaus' first album - complete with PM singing backwards right before the ending invocation. The show ended with a dedication to his friend Trent Reznor before he belted out a stunning rendition of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt
- check out a live video at the bottom of this post.
A huge thank you to Christy Borgman who was gracious enough to share her beautiful photographs here. Check out her other work at LA Woman Photography.
PM made it clear that he'll be back out on the road in September, so stayed tuned for tour date announcements. In the meantime, be sure to sink your teeth into his new album, Ninth. You can check out my review here. Keep up with daily postings by clicking LIKE on my Facebook Page. Cheers! - Bret
