[Friday On The Turntable] Bands that have last 20 years with all Original Members

Welcome to this week's Friday On The Turntable feature! For those of you that follow my blog on Facebook, you'll recall that each Friday I post a featured record that I'm currently enjoying. To enhance the experience, I've been filming short videos - discussing a brief history of the record, my favorite tracks and what it means to me. The video is embedded below - and don't forget to subscribe to my youtube channel here.

This week's episode presents you with a question to ponder: What bands have been around for at least 20 years, and have retained all of the same members that played on the first album through their last album? I look forward to hearing your choices. :)

* Please note: Duos do not count - and their has to be at least a 20 year difference between their first album and their most recent/last album - even if the band is still together. This is all about being together a long time and having a fairly consistent recording output - therefore, long hiatuses are suspect! :)

Ranking U2 - From 'Boy' to 'No Line on the Horizon'

Today marks the second edition of a special series within my weekly feature, Friday on the Turntable. Instead of looking at one album, I am featuring all of U2's records from 1980 - 2009 - and ranking them! It was a mammoth task, and proved frustrating when putting albums that I love against other ones that I love. Nonetheless, I've provided a ranked list - from #12 - #1. While I did include Rattle And Hum, I left off regular live albums and EPs.

If you would like the short / textual version of the list, please scroll past the video. As always, I look forward to reading your comments and feedback. If you missed our 20 Best Lesser Known U2 Songs feature, click here after you're done enjoying this post.

B-side Of The Day: U2 - Touch

If you're reading my blog, chances are you are a pretty big music fan. Like myself, you probably seek out more songs from a band you love, besides just the album tracks. Since bands have been releasing singles, it was common for a non-album track to make the flipside of that record. Sometimes those songs were just throw-aways, other times they were brilliant gems. For this week, these are the songs I'll be presenting to you. I'm hoping you will discover some new ones that will become favorites. Be sure to visit the Life On This Planet Facebook Page, and click LIKE, to keep up on our daily postings. Okay, here we go...

A few months before the release of their debut album, U2 released their second single, and one of the best songs of their early career - '11 O'Clock Tick Tock.' Most people know the song as a highlight from their post-War album, live record - 1983's Under A Blood Red Sky. Produced by Martin Hannett, who is treasured for his work with Joy Division, the '11 O'Clock' single also featured a splendid b-side called 'Touch.' Check it out below. If you'd like to discover some other hidden gems in the U2 catalog, have a look at 15 of the Best U2 Songs You May Not Have Heard. Please enjoy.

U2 - Zoo TV Tour Sun Devil Stadium October 24, 1992

I am a huge U2 fan. I don't care what anyone else says - they are one of the greats. Songs like 'Bad' and 'A Sort Of Homecoming' from The Unforgettable Fire album made me want to become a musician. Sadly, I missed the famous Tempe show that was immortalized in the Rattle And Hum film - my family had just moved to Arizona from Chicago, and it just wasn't possible.

Then when it came to their indoor Spring '92 US Tour with Pixies - well, that sold out before I even had a chance. So when my birthday rolled around in September, my brother Carl got my 2 tickets for the upcoming show at Sun Devil Stadium. It was glorious. If you'd like to read more about that specific concert - please click here.

As of this post, I've seen U2 four times. Here are the details:

Oct 24, 1992 - Zoo TV Tour @Sun Devil Stadium, AZ w/ The Sugarcubes, Public Enemy
April 28, 2001 - Elevation Tour @America West Arena, AZ w/ PJ Harvey
April 14, 2005 - Vertigo Tour @Glendale Arena, AZ w/ Kings Of Leon
Oct 20, 2009 - 360 Tour @ University of Phoenix Stadium, AZ w/ Black Eyed Peas

I would love to hear about your U2 live experiences. Please feel free to leave comments below - or interact at my Facebook / Twitter Pages.

U2 - Live At Red Rocks: Under A Blood Red Sky. Review

Today begins a new series on Life On This Planet - Concert Film Of The Day. I will be watching 5 live concert videos and then featuring one every day this week. Keep up on my daily postings by clicking LIKE over at the Life On This Planet Blog Page on Facebook.

Here is my initial experience with U2 Live At Red Rocks. At some point in the late 80s, I popped in a VHS tape and recorded the concert off of either MTV of VH1 - that tape was cherished. At the time, U2 had just released the War album, so they only had three albums under their belts, but judging by the dedication of the crowd to withstand the weather conditions, U2 was already on their way to massive stardom.

The original video, which was commercially available on VHS, was not the entire show the band played that rainy night at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado on June 5, 1983. The original began with the song Surrender, and was edited down to 12 tracks. In 2008, the band reissued the entire 17-song set in all of its glory. Although I bought the DVD when it came out, I never really sat through it, or its special features, in their entirety.

As I mentioned earlier, this is a remarkable glimpse of the band on the brink of worldwide success, so it is quite exciting to watch them with all of their youthful energy. The set now begins with three songs from their debut record, 1980's Boy. Although an official music video for Sunday Bloody Sunday was never made, the amazing performance taken from this show filled in the void on MTV.

This show was mostly everyone's first exposure to live classics like 11 O'Clock Tick Tock and Party Girl - both are just ridiculously rad to watch after all of these years. I should mention that Bono's inclusion of some of the lyrics to 'Send In The Clowns' still remains edited-out on this release. Check out the full set list further down the page.

I also took the time to listen to the audio commentary from director Gavin Taylor. It was quite fascinating hearing all of his stories about the goings-on of the shoot that due to the weather, almost didn't happen. Definitely worth the time to check that out as well. So obviously if you are a U2 fan, you've already seen this concert, but maybe not in its entirety. If you've never seen U2 before all of the ginormous TV screens and big stage productions, then you've gotta get Live At Red Rocks - purchase links are below.

Track Listing:  Out of Control / Twilight / An Cat Dubh - Into The Heart / Surrender / Two Hearts Beat As One / Seconds / Sunday Bloody Sunday / The Electric Co. / October / New Year's Day / I Threw A Brick Through A Window / A Day Without Me / Gloria / Party Girl / 11 O'Clock Tick Tock / I Will Follow / 40
