31 Horror Movies in 31 Days: Day 8

Day 8 of my Horror Film Marathon

Cujo (1983)

One of the few Stephen King books I have not read is Cujo.  I saw the movie years ago and recently grabbed a DVD copy from the $5 bin at the store.  Last night, I finally unwrapped it to see how well this film has held up.  According to IMDB, Stephen King was inspired to write the story after being scared by his mechanic's intimidating dog.  For those unfamiliar, Cujo, a St. Bernard, contracts rabies from a bat bite and goes on a killing spree.  This is the film debut for Danny Pintauro, who later went on to play Jonathan Bower on TV's Who's The Boss?  Cujo was just as great as when I saw it as a kid.

Some interesting trivia, courtesy of IMDB:

1.  Cujo is an ancient Indian word meaning 'unstoppable force.'
2.  Five St. Bernards were used during filming, along with a mechanical head and a guy in a dog costume.
3.  The foam around Cujo's mouth was made of a mixture of egg whites and sugar.  The dogs caused problems on the set by constantly licking it off!

  1. I saw Cujo in 2007 in Erie,PA--Dee Wallace chatted with the audience before and after the show--Apparently the weather was freezing rather than being so hot as depicted. I have a signed picture of her dancing with the Director and a stunt person in a Rabid St. Bernard suit. Giggles.
