B-side Of The Day: U2 - Touch

If you're reading my blog, chances are you are a pretty big music fan. Like myself, you probably seek out more songs from a band you love, besides just the album tracks. Since bands have been releasing singles, it was common for a non-album track to make the flipside of that record. Sometimes those songs were just throw-aways, other times they were brilliant gems. For this week, these are the songs I'll be presenting to you. I'm hoping you will discover some new ones that will become favorites. Be sure to visit the Life On This Planet Facebook Page, and click LIKE, to keep up on our daily postings. Okay, here we go...

A few months before the release of their debut album, U2 released their second single, and one of the best songs of their early career - '11 O'Clock Tick Tock.' Most people know the song as a highlight from their post-War album, live record - 1983's Under A Blood Red Sky. Produced by Martin Hannett, who is treasured for his work with Joy Division, the '11 O'Clock' single also featured a splendid b-side called 'Touch.' Check it out below. If you'd like to discover some other hidden gems in the U2 catalog, have a look at 15 of the Best U2 Songs You May Not Have Heard. Please enjoy.

B-side Of The Day: The Replacements - Portland

If you're reading my blog, chances are you are a pretty big music fan. Like myself, you probably seek out more songs from a band you love, besides just the album tracks. Since bands have been releasing singles, it was common for a non-album track to make the flipside of that record. Sometimes those songs were just throw-aways, other times they were brilliant gems. Apparently, 'Portland' was written as an apology for a drunken, disaster of a Replacments gig, that took place in Portland, Oregon in the late 80s. Not really a true b-side, as it didn't appear on any single, it's rather an outtake from the Mats' 1989 LP, Don't Tell A Soul. If you own the 2-disc All For Nothing/Nothing For All collection, then you already have the song, otherwise it's been made available as a bonus track on the expanded, remastered edition of Don't Tell A Soul. It's a great song, and it's puzzling why it wasn't included on a proper album. Give it a listen.

B-side Of The Day: The Cure - Breathe

Since bands have been releasing singles, it was common for a non-album track to make the flipside of that record. Sometimes those songs were just throw-aways, other times they were brilliant compositions. For the next couple of weeks, these are the songs I'll be presenting to you. I'm hoping you will discover some new tracks that will become favorites. Follow my daily postings by clicking LIKE over at the Life On This Planet Facebook Page.

When it comes to b-sides, The Cure are masters. If you don't have the time (or the money) to run around collecting all of the different formats of their singles, you can grab 2004's Join The Dots - a 4-disc box set, collecting mostly all of their b-sides and non-album tracks. Join The Dots is essential for any Cure fan, as many of their b-sides surpassed some of the album tracks. Take a look at my Best of The Cure List, which includes the 5 Best non-album tracks. Okay, so today's featured b-side is taken from the flipside of the 1987 UK single Catch (it was also on the Just Like Heaven US single). Please enjoy Breathe - it's pretty amazing.

B-side Of The Day: Mazzy Star - I'm Gonna Bake My Biscuit

If you're reading my blog, chances are you are a pretty big music fan. Like myself, you probably seek out more songs from a band you love, besides just the album tracks. Since bands have been releasing singles, it was common for a non-album track to make the flipside of that record. Sometimes those songs were just throw-aways, other times they were brilliant gems. For the next couple of weeks, these are the songs I'll be presenting to you. I'm hoping you will discover some new tracks that will become favorites. Okay, here we go with Day 1...

Back in 1993, Mazzy Star released an amazingly, beautiful song called Fade Into You. If you bought that single back in the day, then you probably know that there were two b-sides that weren't on the album So Tonight That I Might See. The first one was called Under My Car (check that out here) and the other was a cover of I'm Gonna Bake My Biscuit - originally by blues guitarist/singer Memphis Minnie (check out the original here). The Mazzy Star singles are long out-of-print, so thankfully Capitol Records has made them available on Amazon and iTunes as a collection called Deep Cuts - check out the links below to grab this track and a few other rare Mazzy b-sides.
